Red Bull Night Slider What a night !!! Once the Johannesburg sky line cleared over BASE 3 is was all out wakeboarding action as18 top local and international wakeboarders and Wake Skaters wowed the capacity crowd. The riders got a chance to wet their boards and experience the new “fun box”, as they performed a night filled of flips, rails and back slides at Red Bull Night Slider! The event which saw 3 international riders Brian Grubb (USA), JD Webb (USA) and Federico Bruland (Argentina) bringing in a new dimension in skill and tricks to the local wakeboarding scene. The main tool for this event was the “Fun Box”. This structure measuring a massive 32 m in length, 2m high and 2.5m wide created quite a stir among the riders and spectators alike. The Fun Box set just a few metres off the viewing deck is a solid structure with rails, wall ride and a splash pool which houses 9 Tons of water. The riders pushed themselves to pull the most incredible stunts and tricks through out the evening. With so much action on the water the night would not be complete without the accompanying sounds of acoustic rock artist Farryl Purkiss and drum & base DJ low from African Dope records. The two played some unbelievable sets which kept the crowds’ feet tapping and towards the end DJ Switch hit the floor and started a bit of a B-Boying session. The line up of Athletes we had taking part in this event raised the bar in Wakeboarding and I am sure converted a few to wake skating. JD Webb (USA) started his set with a Gap-Grab off the slider and set the tone for the event. The athletes were pumped and after pulling off the sickest tricks had to go back for more. The guys played hard and the crowds could not get enough. It was great to see the support wakeboarding received and how the guys handled this massive slider. Wakeboarding has grown in popularity through the years but sliding of this nature has not found a home until now. This giant structure has claimed residence at BASE 3 (Leisure Lakes) and will remain here for budding boarders to use and hone their skills.
